Who doesn’t want to go to Mars? Of course, all of us! But Elon Musk cannot wait to make it a reality. The SpaceX and Tesla founder on Tuesday again gave a projected timeline of putting humans on Mars.

According to Musk, humans should be on Mars in 10 years from now. Or at least the flight to Mars should begin within this time frame. During an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast, Elon Musk said that the best case scenario will begin human flights to Mars in five years. “Worst case, 10 years,” Musk said.

What’s in Musk’s way?
The biggest challenge for Musk and SpaceX is engineering the space vehicle that will take humans 352.83 million kilometres away based on current distance (the minimum distance from Earth to Mars is 54.6 million kilometres).

“Starship is the most complex and advanced rocket that’s ever been made by, I don’t know, an order of magnitude or something like that,” he said while adding that “it’s really next level.”

SpaceX has already begun testing prototypes of the 400-foot rocket that could eventually send humans to Mars. The launchpad for Starship rockets is currently being built in Florida.

“Right now, you couldn’t fly to Mars for $1 trillion. No amount of money could get you to Mars. We need to get that to, like, something that is actually possible at all,” Musk said.
