MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry have welcomed their daughter, with the Duchess of Sussex giving birth on June 4, they announced today.
It has just been announced that the Duke and Duchess’ second child is called Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. What is the meaning behind these names?
A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan confirmed the news today, saying:
It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.
Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.
The couple has decided to name the baby girl after Her Majesty the Queen, as family and friends call The Queen Lilibet.
The second name is Diana, in honor to grandmother Princess Diana of Wales. “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.
Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales, the spokesperson explained.
Although they have decided to officially call her Lilibet and nickname her “Lili”, the name is related to the Hebrew name Elizabeth and the English names Libby and Lilibeth.
The meaning of Lilibet is “God’s promise”.
Similarly, the name Elizabeth’s original meaning according to Hebrew is “God Is My Oath” or “My God is abundance”.
Elizabeth was also the mother of John the Baptist in the Bible. Royals with the name Elizabeth include Queens Elizabeth I and II of England.
For their daughter’s second name, the couple has chosen Diana after Prince Harry’s mother the Princess of Wales. The name Diana has a Greek original and means “Divine”.
Originally a contraction of “Diviana,” Diana is also the Roman Goddess of the moon, hunt, forests, and childbirth.
In Persian, Diana means supplier or messenger of beneficence and wellness.
This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family,” said the spokesperson.
In a personal statement on their personal website, Harry and Meghan said: “On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.
She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.
Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family, the couple said.
Back in 2019, Meghan and Prince Harry had their first child who they named Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor.
Archie is the shorter version of the name Archibald, which has Germanic origins and means genuine, brave and precious.
Harrison was chosen in a sweet nod to the baby’s father as Harrison literally translates to “son of Harry”.
